Hello. Today, I am trying out the one of the sliced meat substitutes by Quorn. I've had plenty of Quorn in the past. Sometimes it upsets my tummy and I wonder if I've been picking the ones with milk in. So, to be safe, I have picked on of their vegan styles.
The first thing to note is the smell. It definitely smells smokey but there is a hint of something I can't quite explain. It didn't smell overly appetising. It feels a bit like those dinosaur shaped sliced meats you get for children and looks a bit like cheap chicken roll. The meat has a matte look, not shiny like you would get from real ham slices.
The first thing I noticed on taking a bite is that it was a bit mushy. When you bite in to meat, you sort of bite straight through it. On chewing, this made a paste-like feel in my mouth and it felt like it stayed on my teeth. The taste wasn't close to a smoky ham slice, the smell was better than the taste. I tried it in a sandwich and it was alright but I don't think I'd be in a hurry to buy it again. I didn't feel like it was a good meat substitute. I could easily tell that it wasn't meat and would notice if someone tried to tell me that it was. Maybe that sounds silly as the whole point of this food is that I'm not eating meat and I know people who have said they don't like the texture of meat. If you are one of these, try it, you may like it as its own product but if you are looking for something that resembles a meat slice, you may want to give this a miss.
I am going to give this a 2/10 as I wasn't keen on the texture or the flavour and as someone who used to love their meat this didn't feel like a suitable replacement. Sorry Quorn, this was not up to scratch for me. If you do wish to give this a try, it was £2 from Tesco.
Thanks for reading,
MLV
